Fishburn Parish Council



Fishburn Parish Council is the third tier council serving the local community, upper tiers include Sedgefield Borough Council and Durham County Council. Council membership is proportionate to an electorate population of 1903.currently, eleven councilors are elected for a four-year term of office.

Councilors elected in 1999 include:
Mr. R. Waller. (Chair) Mrs. S. Nicholson (Vice Chair) M. Hayles, Mrs. E. Parsons, Mr. T .Potts, Mr. D. Younger,
Mr. J. Taylor, Mrs. E. Mason,  Mrs. M. Wilson

The council is served by a part time clerk and two full time employees. The annual precept in year 1999/2000 is £43,000.00, which is levied on 1100 residential properties.

Fishburn Parish Councils priorities change from year to year. However, the core activities include care and maintenance of the village green, the cemetery, the golf course area, 100 allotments and Butterwick recreation ground which provides two football pitches, changing rooms, a bowling green and pavilion.

The council's most recent priority has been to provide a good coverage of children's play equipment around the village. The success of this strategy led to the Durham County Council environment award for Stobart play area. Children's play equipment has been provided by the Parish Council, with assistance from Sedgefield Borough Council and local voluntary groups.

Other local groups are well served through a wide network of voluntary organizations that provide social and cultural activities for residents, ranging from children's play groups to senior citizen clubs. The village demonstrates a strong sense of social cohesion and community spirit as demonstrated by a thriving Youth and Community Centre.
 
The education facilities in Fishburn consist of a nursery and Primary School. Parish councilors serve on the governing body of the school.
Secondary education is provided by facilities close to the village, particularly Sedgefield community college.
