The Mothers Club

The club was founded in 1951 by the mother and baby clinic at the Welfare hall. In those days it was known as the "young mothers club" but over the years the "young" has been dropped due to the advanced age of most of the members.
There is a membership of around twenty five, and the meetings are held fortnightly in the community centre.

Key members are:
Dorothy Koziol ……..President.
Eleanor Maddison…..Secretary.
Sadie Ward……………...Treasurer.

The mothers club is a lively group who stay young at heart .At their meetings the game of beetle has been a favourite pastime with members. This alternates with bingo, and Grace Wilson's general knowledge quiz is a must. Members birthdays and anniversaries are celebrated with wine and a buffet meal.
In the late 1960s the club traveled all over the country performing pantomimes written and produced by Grace and assisted by Jennie Smith, who was choreographer and adviser. In all eight pantomimes were  performed. Every penny raised from the performances was given to charity. A trend that has continued to the present day.
When the ladies hear of a special need, they make that their target. Raffles ,jumble sales etc. are held to raise money for their chosen charities.
Every summer the ladies hold an open night, Inviting guests and neighbouring mothers clubs to the Working Mens club where the ladies provide  a buffet supper , and Grace and friends provide some amusing entertainment. these evenings are extremely popular, and the proceeds go to the chosen charity.
There is a camaraderie among the ladies which is quite unique and new members are always made most welcome.
Over the years the mothers club has given thousands of pounds to various worthy causes and hope to continue for many years into the new millennium .
